It might take some time to wrap your head around the theming system but it boils down to defining a stylesheet file for the theme and at least one PHP page template based on the master 'look' of your site. Add PHP code in strategic places to insert the title, posts, widgets, etc. and let WordPress do the heavy lifting. Look at other themes as examples, particularly the ones that claim to be simple and CSS-oriented, they should be easier to decipher.

Everything you need to know is here:

Essentially you need a webhost, either free or paid, download Wordpress from Wordpress.org, upload to your webhost, then download Comicpress and upload that as well. This site has a fairly straightforward, easy to understand tutorial.

Here's a plugin designed to do just that:

Let me now if you need any help. I've been building WordPress websites for my clients for years.

You can take the content from your existing portfolio page and create a wordpress page with the same content. When you click "Write" inside the wordpress admin dashboard, it defaults to a new post. You can click "Page" just below "Write" to create a new page instead of a post. When you publish the page it will become part of the sites main navigation bar, too.

Lisa,
I use hostgator for my hosting. They have a good package where you can have hosting of up to 100 domains for $10/month. I really like them. They also use cpanel and fantastico, so installing wordpress is actually really easy through this function. And yes, you can import the free wordpress templates, but you need an FTP client to upload them to your server. There are free FTP programs out there, I use SmartFTP personally, but there are others.
There is more information on wordpress and how to use it at

If your hosting provider provides the Fantastico application through Cpanel, it's really easy to install. Fantastico installs various applications (one of which is wordpress) for you in just a few clicks.
Once you've installed wordpress you have a basic functioning web site. At this point you can easily download free (and paid) themes and plugins. THey just go into your public_html\wp_content\templates or plugins folder.
I have videos of doing each of these things here:

It really is quite easy... just find some good video tutorials. If you can tell me who your hosting provider I could get you exact instructions.
